A new move to boost Sheffield area charities and amateur sports organisations during the recession has been welcomed by a tax expert.
From this month, claims for Gift Aid repayments from the tax authorities can be made online, resulting in a quicker and easier service.
Simon Bladen, specialist charities advisor at independent chartered accountants Hawsons, of Glossop Road, Sheffield, said:
The challenging economic climate is making it difficult for the not-for-profit sector, with income suffering accordingly, so this new service has come at the right time.
The Charities Online scheme introduced by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) means that claims for gift aid will be processed much more quickly, reducing burdensome administration and saving money on postal costs and delays. It should really help charities, many of whom are struggling.
Simon also welcomed the Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme, also being introduced in April, which allows charities and amateur sports clubs to claim top-up payments on cash donations of £20 or less without the need to collect Gift Aid declarations.
