A Leeds shop manager has rung up his final sale after almost three decades serving customers in the same shopping centre.
Mike Green, 67, has retired from The Yorkshire Linen Co after 17 years working in its Merrion Centre store, the last 16 of those as manager.
Mr Green, from Moortown, began working for Brentfords – later to become Brentford Nylons – in the Centre in 1984. Twelve years later, he jumped ship to work for the fledgling Yorkshire Linen Co, which had recently opened its second store in a unit neighbouring Brentfords.
Ross Leventhal, Managing Director of The Yorkshire Linen Co, said:
“The first time I met Mike was when he came into our store on a spying mission. I noticed him writing down prices and I told him to ‘beggar off’!
“A few months later he came and asked me for a job. He started as deputy manager and 12 months later he was promoted to manager. Mike has been a superb manager and is very highly thought of by all his colleagues.
“Our Merrion Centre store is one of our most successful, and a lot of this down to Mike knowing the business inside out.
“Having worked in the Merrion Centre since 1984, he must one of the longest serving shop workers there. We will certainly miss him and I’m sure many in the Merrion Centre – workers and customers alike – will miss him too.”
“The Yorkshire Linen Co has been a way of life for me for the past 17 years. I will certainly miss my colleagues and the regular customers, including many who followed me from Brentfords.
“However, I’m looking forward to spending more time with my six grandchildren, working in the garden and following Leeds Rhinos.”
Mike is being replaced in his role by Kath Driver, the manager of The Yorkshire Linen Co’s Armley Store.
