Following the announcement by British Gas that it will cease the practice of automatic rollover energy contracts, The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) calls on the remaining big six providers to stop this unfair practice.
FSB research suggests one in four small firms had been rolled over without their knowledge and an overwhelming 78 per cent of respondents said they would support the abolition of rollovers.
The FSB has been campaigning on the issue of automatic contract rollovers for over five years and earlier this year worked with Caroline Lucas MP to table a Private Members Bill which would have ended automatic contract rollovers.
Gordon Millward, Regional Chairman, Federation of Small Businesses, said:
“We are encouraged that British Gas has bowed to pressure from small businesses and are ending the automatic of rollover energy contracts. However, the majority of small businesses in the UK are still at risk because EDF Energy, npower, Scottish Power and SSE continue to maintain this practice.
“Prime Minister David Cameron rightly called businesses the engine of our economy and committed himself to doing everything possible to provide the environment in which they can flourish.
“The Federation of Small Businesses has been campaigning on the issue of rollover energy contracts for over five years and calls on the rest of the energy industry to do the right thing and put an end to this unfair practice once and for all.”
