Passengers from Sheffield will soon be within 25 minutes of Yorkshire’s Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield as work has started on the Finningley and Rossington Regeneration Route Scheme (FARRRS).

Improved access to South Yorkshire’s Airport is now one step closer since work began in October on the much anticipated new link road.

FARRRS will see a new link road from Junction 3 of the M18 serve the south-east of Doncaster, making a trip to the airport even easier for those travelling from all areas including Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham and further afield.

The new road will reduce journey times for airport passengers and cargo operators from Sheffield by up to 15 minutes.

The improvements in journey time will also lead to less carbon emissions and relieve congestion on some roads in the area.

Steve Gill, managing director for Doncaster Sheffield Airport said:

“We are delighted that the development of the new road has begun.

“This is fantastic news, not just for the airport but for the region.

“In the long term this development could lead to the creation of over 20,000 jobs and the investment of over £1.5bn.  This will be a transformational project.

“FARRRS will bring an additional 0.5 million people within 30 minutes of Doncaster Sheffield Airport and an additional one million within the 60 minute drive time, taking the total catchment to over 6.2 million.

“From day one Doncaster Council understood the strategic importance of this road to the region and how it can help the airport realise its potential and so we are delighted to see work commence.

“The delivery of this much needed infrastructure will truly place the airport at the heart of the region, helping to position Doncaster Sheffield Airport as the natural airport of choice for passengers and freight operators.”

The road is a critical component in the drive to further develop airport connectivity which will act as a catalyst in the continued development of Doncaster and the wider Sheffield City Region.

Paul Cooper, airport negotiations manager for Thomson and First Choice – the biggest tour operator out of Doncaster Sheffield airport – said:

“Anything that makes holiday makers journeys to the airport easier is fantastic for us as a company.

“We are really proud to offer a wide variety of holidays from regional airports such as Doncaster Sheffield, as we know how important it is for customers to have the option to fly from their local airport.

“With the addition of this new road, our customers are able to jet away to sunnier climes without the added hassle of a long drive to the airport!”
