Monkbar Hotel gears up for Tour de France “Festival of Wheels and Meals”!

Staff from a city centre York hotel are gearing up to mark July’s Tour de France in style – by hosting a month-long “Festival of Wheels and Meals”!

In the run up to Le Grand Depart, The BEST WESTERN Monkbar Hotel will be offering incentives to customers arriving by bicycle and encouraging staff to come to work on their bikes, plus creating a special menu comprising of classical and contemporary French dishes and beverages.

The hotel’s “Meals and Wheels Festival”, begins on Monday June 2 and will end on Sunday, June 29 – seven days before the world famous cycle race sets off from York on the second leg of its journey.

Monkbar Hotel general manager Graham Usher said: “Le Grand Depart is going to be York’s biggest event for decades, and everyone is pushing the boat out to ensure it is a truly memorable few days.

“For our part, we have plumped for a ‘Festival of Wheels and Meals’. The kitchen brigade will be putting together a special French-themed menu featuring a selection of starters, mains and desserts.

“Sitting alongside the classics, there will be a few surprises too – French favourites given a Yorkshire twist! 

“And, to promote the healthy aspect of cycling, we will be offering incentives to guests who arrive at the hotel by bicycle.

“York lends itself beautifully to cycling. It’s the perfect way to sightsee and we have the wonderful York-Selby cycle way on our doorstep.” 

Last July – exactly a year to the day the race sets off from York – eight members of staff from the Monkbar Hotel team cycled a combined distance of 242-miles for charity.

The team, which included Mr Usher, completed the challenge along the York-Selby cycleway in a time of 2hrs and 30 mins, raising £500 for Martin House Children’s Hospice in the process.
