The University of Sheffield has beaten stiff competition from universities around the UK to win the CUBO (College and University Business Officers) Award for Commercial University of the Year 2014.
The Award was submitted by the University’s ACS (Accommodation and Commercial Services), which last year set up the highly successful subsidiary UNICUS to provide commercially competitive catering and hospitalityto consumers.
Accepting the award award at Royal Holloway University, London, Caryn Masters, head of commercial, said:
“We are all really proud of what the commercial team have achieved over the last 12 months, in what has been an incredible year.
“This year has seen the launch of one of Sheffield’s most successful independent boutique hotels, Halifax Hall, which also recently won a TripAdvisor award, and the contemporary restaurant, Inox Dine, within the Students’ Union, currently rated by TripAdvisor as one of the top restaurants in Sheffield.
“We have also launched The Village Store within The Endcliffe Village in response to student feedback, which is open to local residents and seven cafe outlets” she explained.
UNICUS employs over 500 primarily local staff on a variety of commercial contracts, and has experienced significant growth in its first year of trading.
It has created additional employment opportunities for boththe local and student market, and all profits are reinvested into improving University services.
The Award comes just two years after the University won the CUBO Best Student Housing category in 2012.
