An initiative to help young people get on to the work ladder has allocated £150,000 to local businesses in the last two years.

Hambleton District Council’s ‘Changing Lives Building Business’ scheme was launched in 2012, supporting 15 small businesses and 15 young people from the district in its first year.

The District Council also took on an extra five apprentices.

And such is its success 2014 has seen it help another 28 businesses – with 20 of them already employing a young person.

The scheme helps small Hambleton based businesses take on apprentices – either for the first time or as an additional post.

The £2,000 grant must be spent on a 16 to 24 year old that lives in Hambleton. And there is a supporting grant to help pay for essential tools or training.

This year’s businesses include a Soccer Academy, Plumbers, the voluntary sector, independent High Street shops, robotic manufacturers, GP surgeries, construction  and landscaping firms.

They all offer specialised training, work experience skills – and hopefully a permanent job at the end of the training.

“In the last two years we have allocated £150,000 to help some of the young unemployed in the district  – as well as smaller businesses which might struggle to afford to employ and apprentice said” the Leader of the Council, Coun Mark Robson.

“We are delighted to see a number of young people taking on new challenges and gaining new skills with the opportunity of a permanent job at the end.

“Local employers have really embraced this scheme and are keen to offer opportunities to young people in the district.  This is great, not just for the young people but for the local economy too”.

There are still limited places left on the scheme – if you are a small business based in the Hambleton area and would like to take on a new or additional apprentice please contact Nicole Patterson Business and Economy Manager on 01609 767233 or Nicole.patterson@hambleton.gov.uk.
