Solicitor Adrian Lyon is embarking on a three-year course to further develop his expertise in the area of personal and commercial disputes.

Adrian works in the dispute resolution unit at Langleys Solicitors. He is studying to become an associate member of the Association of Contentious Trusts and Probate Specialists (ACTAPS) which provides a forum for lawyers who specialise in disputes regarding wills, trusts and probate.

The three-year course covers will and trust disputes and claims made under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975.

Adrian has worked on numerous claims under the Act over the last two years, including a claim which was successfully settled for over £6 million.

Adrian has enrolled upon the course in order to supplement and develop his specialism in a growing area of law.

Adrian said: “There has been a large increase in the number of disputed wills in recent years. The reasons for this include the rise in second marriages resulting in more people who expect to be provided for under wills.

Another factor for there being more disputed wills is the increase in property values which means there are more valuable estates for people to contest.”

Adrian’s membership of ACTAPS will enable him to share his experience and knowledge with dispute resolution specialists.

The association also has a code of conduct by which lawyers must ensure that disputes are resolved promptly and cost-effectively wherever possible.
