Retailer Satminder Deo is predicting healthy trading figures in 2015 as the consumer trend for shopping ‘little and often’ grows stronger.

Satminder owns three Costcutter stores in South Yorkshire and says more customers are opting to buy their groceries at convenience shops like his instead of large supermarkets.

“People are choosing the smaller shops and we’ve got to capitalise on that through the quality brands that we offer and by giving great local and personal service,” said Satminder.

“The economy is picking up, there are more jobs and people are saying they have more money – I think 2015 will be good for my business and that I will be able to continue to grow while continuing to offer great value to the communities my stores serve.”

Satminder stocks Costcutter’s new ‘Independent’ own brand at all three of his stores. “Customers want value without compromising on quality and the Independent brand is going well as the range has expanded and customers get to know it and recognise it as Costcutter’s brand,” said Satminder whose newest store at Edlington, Doncaster recently opened, creating 10 jobs in the local area.

The store, in Violet Avenue, has undergone substantial changes to make it bigger and brighter inside for customers. A major improvement has been the moving of the internal Post Office to the front of the store to make it more accessible to customers.

The store has also been reorganised to improve the size of product ranges and make them more appealing to customers. Fresh meat and bakery ranges are provided by local suppliers, and a Lottery, Pay Point and cash machine are all available.

Later this month, the store will have an improved frontage to make it even more welcoming for the community he serves.

Satminder said: “The store is a good size so customers can get everything they need on their doorstep especially when many of them now shop little and often.”

Satminder’s other Costcutter stores are Wath-in-Dearne and Maltby, and he employs a total 30 staff. The Wath-on-Dearne store – which Satminder has managed for more than 14 years – triumphed in the Convenience Retail Awards 2013, winning Best Small Convenience store and Best Customer Service in the UK.

Satminder’s stores are part of the Costcutter Supermarkets Group which has more than 2,500 convenience stores throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland operating under the Costcutter, Mace and Kwiksave brands.
