A Barnsley opticians set its sights on raising awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s Society with a bake sale and a guess the sweets in a jar competition.

Scrivens Opticians & Hearing Care on Market Street invited customers to enjoy tasty treats in return for donations to the charity to mark Dementia Awareness Week  and gave away goody bags too.

Manager Lauryn Evans said: “We wanted to do something because dementia touches so many families in the community. We’d like to thank customers for backing the event as funds are needed for research and support.”

Scrivens is supporting Alzheimer’s Society as its chosen charity for the second successive year after raising £12,700 in 2015. It was chosen because of the growing evidence of a link between uncorrected hearing loss and dementia, including Alzheimer’s.
