An engineer from professional services and engineering firm WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff in Leeds is celebrating a top four finish at her first international competition representing Team GB at the 2016 European Age Group Triathlon Championships.
Hannah Riechert, 27, travelled to Lisbon, Portugal last week to compete for Team GB and came fourth overall, just missing out on a medal place. She was the second British athlete over the line at the event, a huge achievement for the engineer who only started competing in triathlons two years ago.
Hannah won a place on the prestigious Team GB following a top-four finish in the qualifying rounds for her age group (25-29) in Nottingham last July. Hannah is one of just 12 GB athletes selected in her age group as part of Team GB.
She has already taken part in two triathlons this year; the Skipton Tri in April, where she finished third, and the Harrogate Triathlon in May, where she finished top in the women’s race.
Hannah, who has worked at WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff in Leeds as a transport planner since 2015, was sponsored by the company at the European Championships. Her official Team GB kit featured the initials ‘TW’; a tribute to Hannah’s friend and former training partner Tim, who tragically died last year.
Hannah said: “I’ve been preparing for the European Championships for the last ten months, and I’ve only been competing in triathlons competitively since September 2014, so finishing in fourth place is a huge personal achievement.
“Leeds is a fantastic place to train as a triathlete; the city is incredibly supportive of its new sporting talent, as we’ve seen with the Brownlee brothers and boxer, Nicola Adams. Training can be a gruelling process, but the support from my colleagues at WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff, along with their sponsorship, has been fantastic.”
