Bradford based Christeyns scored 83 per cent in a recent British Safety Council audit, awarding them an overall rating of three stars.
Putting employees first is top of the list for laundry chemical manufacturer Christeyns and health and safety for their team of over 100 staff is paramount.
Christeyns has been a member of the British Safety Council for ten years and like all responsible employers has a series of procedures and systems in place with strict guidelines to follow.
The British Safety Council Five Star Occupational Health and Safety Audit is utilised by organisations worldwide to benchmark their safety management systems against current best practice. The audit measures performance whilst identifying areas of positive or negative practice and provides a structured approach for continuous improvement.
The four day audit of Christeyns health and safety management systems included a review of safety management documentation, interviews with managers and staff and site tours and inspections. Throughout the audit process leadership and commitment as well as continuous improvement were continually assessed.
The audit also looks at the organisation’s approach to occupational health, employee wellbeing, safety culture, allocation of resources to health and safety and planning for change, all of which are considered as important best practice factors.
“We were keen to have the audit to see exactly how we were doing currently and if any improvements could be made,” said Jayne Talbot, environmental, health & safety manager.
“We were particularly pleased that we achieved 100 per cent for some sub-sections and it is really useful to see how our procedures compared to the best of the best.
“The audit also offers us a structured path for continuous improvement and how we can progress to the next level.”
