A team of cyclists has set off from York as part of a gruelling 600 mile cycle challenge to raise £50,000 for York-based Benenden Charitable Trust and SAMH (Scottish Association for Mental Health).
The challenge, ‘Cycle GB 2016’, will eventually see two sets of riders completing a 600 mile route from Glasgow to York. For Stage one, the first group of riders worked their way over three days from SAMH’s local office in Glasgow to Benenden’s head office in York.
Stage two commenced yesterday with a second group of riders tackling the remaining route to Benenden Hospital in Kent over four days. The two teams of cyclists include 9 staff from the Benenden team based in York and aim to raise a total of £50,000 for the two charities.
Thom Craigen, charitable trust manager at Benenden who organised the event said: “We’re all incredibly excited about getting started with stage two of the cycle which is going to be a really tough challenge for the riders – particularly those amongst the group who started out as beginners!
‘The money we’ve raised will be helping to support two fantastic causes and the team have been putting everything they’ve got into training to help prepare for the event. A huge thank you goes to everyone who has supported us so far!’
In support of the event, staff at Marriott Hotels across the country will be matching the efforts of the riders on individual days, riding ‘MILE for MILE’ with the cyclists in their own fundraising events. The team from York Marriott will be pedalling the 81 mile distance between York and Lincoln.
All money raised from the events will be split equally between the two charities: Benenden Charitable Trust which helps those experiencing financial difficulties or distress because of sickness, infirmity, disability or any medical conditions – and SAMH which offers support, training and recovery for those experiencing mental health problems.
Major events sponsors are also on board to support the event – including property and construction company Wilmott Dixon, injury rehabilitation specialists Rehabworks and insurance brokers Keegan & Pennykid.
Other sponsors include membership publishing agency Think, printing company Spellman Walker, Hatmill Supply Chain Consultancy and creative marketing agency Space Creative. With support also being offered from a range of business including sports nutrition company Chia Charge, cycling experts Skinny Tyres and Mandrill Media who will be filming the event.
Support has also been offered from Marriott Hotels in the UK, who are assisting with accommodation for the riders across various stages of the cycle (Glasgow, York and Cheshunt) and Virgin Trains East Coast who are providing travel to and from the start and finish points.
The team will be posting regular updates about the challenge on their Facebook event page ‘Cycle GB 2016’.
