Volunteers from Leeds Building Society’s IT department revamped two children’s Sure Start centres.

The 18 colleagues tidied up the garden area at the Horsforth centre and transformed the interior and exterior in Headingley.

They were taking advantage of the mutual’s volunteering scheme, which allows all employees a day’s paid leave each year to help in the community.

Claire Birch, Headingley and Horsforth Children’s centre manager, said: “We’re very grateful to the volunteers from Leeds Building Society.

“They not only painted the entire centre in Headingley but also raised the funds to pay for the paint and the decoration. One lady had very kindly made mobiles to hang from the ceiling which the children love.

“The Horsforth outside area was transformed by adding ball runs, mud kitchens, chalk boards, revamping the old sand pit and painting all the fencing. Special thanks to WSH Services Ltd for supplying the wood chip, it has made such a difference to the garden area.

“The children and families that attend the centres will benefit hugely from all the hard work undertaken. David Hassall, who led the team, was an inspiration and I cannot thank him enough for his commitment to helping us.”

David, from the Society’s IT Software Delivery team, said: “It was a great team building exercise, strenuous but satisfying – especially when you could see the completed work.

“The Society also donated furniture to both children’s centres following our recent branch refurbishments.

“I’d like to thank Turner and Wood Decorating supplies and Wickes (Pudsey) for donating paint and play sand.”
