East Yorkshire smokehouse taste gold

Smoked Salmon from in Long Riston has scooped a gold star from the judges, who described the fish as “buttery, velvety and beautifully translucent”.

Judges at the 2013 awards, organised by the Guild of Fine Food, whittled Staal’s smoked salmon down from more than 10,000 products to award it a gold star.

Up to 405 judges spent 50 judging days from May through to July to find the winners.

The judges said:

“The smoked salmon has a subtle smoke that enhances rather than overwhelms the flavour. It’s got a nice buttery, velvety texture without being too soft. Beautifully translucent and well sliced.”

, who set up the business with wife Georgina twenty months ago, said:

“It’s really wonderful to have picked up a gold star for our smoked salmon after securing two gold stars for our smoked duck last year.

“It’s a huge boost for a small business striving to produce quality products and makes all the long hours and hard work worthwhile.”
