Biffa Award helps fund Calderdale church improvements

A Calderdale church is to benefit from a £32,303 grant from Biffa Award, a multi-million pound fund that helps to build communities and transform lives through awarding grants to community and environmental projects across the UK.

The heating improvement project at Christ Church, Mount Pellon, near Halifax, which was awarded funding under Biffa Award’s Community Buildings theme, will replace the inadequate heating system, which will help to reduce the building’s carbon footprint and running costs.

Completion of the project will also help maintain the partly listed building which dates back to 1854.

The works will include the replacement of the existing gas boiler with two wall mounted Worcester Bosch Condensing system boilers and the installation of new heating flow and return pipes from the boiler house to the service area near the organ, the youth group room radiators and chancel’s new radiators.

The new system will mean that rooms can be heated independently, improving the comfort for current and future user groups.

Sharon Tyler, fundraising co-ordinator Christ Church, said:

“Groups can’t wait to use the open space this new heating system has created, people are asking us if they can book parties in the church building and we’re even looking forward to a really cold winter to test the new system.

“Of course, this would not have been possible without the generous funding from Biffa Award.

“In addition to the heating system, we have now replaced the flooring – which was as old as the building in places – and we’re now looking for funding to replace our seating. ”

Gillian French, Biffa Award programme manager, said:

“We are pleased to support the installation of a new heating system at Christ Church, which will greatly benefit this community facility, by improving the comfort and reducing the carbon footprint.”
