Chicken, chorizo and the great Yorkshire cream tea were among the foods celebrated at a glittering Deliciouslyorkshire Awards, which saw 20 businesses across North, South, East and West Yorkshire scoop prizes for their delicious foods and drinks.
It was a bumper night for family bakers Lottie Shaw’s, Halifax, which was awarded title of Best Bakery and Supreme Product for its Seriously Good Yorkshire Parkin alongside Swillington Organic, Leeds, which won Best Fresh Product and Best Fresh Meat for its free range organic chicken.
Newcomers Jollyum, Bedale, and Nibnibs from Ripon scooped awards too – Jollyum gaining Best New Product for its soya dessert range, and baked snack company Nibnibs presented with the ‘Best New Business’ title.
The ceremony, which included a dazzling drinks reception, canapés and a sumptuous banquet that featured many of the shortlisted foods – including Smoked Trout & Horseradish on Dill Scones from Best Fish winner Staal Smokehouse; Yorkshire Salami bruschetta from Best Prepared Meat winners The British Premium Sausage Company; and ice-cream from Best Dairy Yummy Yorkshire Ice-cream – was guest hosted by seasoned food award judge and BBC broadcaster Nigel Barden, who brought his wealth of foodie expertise to the event.
Nigel said:
“We’re always amazed by the hidden gems lurking on the dining tables and in the delis of Yorkshire.
“Tonight was our chance to honour these food heroes for their hard work and talent and get their name out there. They thoroughly deserve these tasty trophies.”
Cath Clelland, chair of directors at Deliciouslyorkshire finished the evening by giving everyone a sneak peek into the future of the Deliciouslyorkshire brand.
She said:
“Deliciouslyorkshire is now able to grant a licence to distributors to provide market access for Yorkshire producers and growers in return for using the Deliciouslyorkshire brand and all it conveys – quality of product, service, provenance – and all things great about Yorkshire.
“The products will be sold under the Deliciouslyorkshire label, but will actually be from our members.
“Our first license is with Ibbotson’s and we’re excited to tell you that within a month you will see the Deliciouslyorkshire brand in use in various supermarkets across the region on a range of Yorkshire grown vegetables.”
