A Bedale business has offered to refund customers’ parking fees to encourage people to keep shopping in the town while work is carried out in the Market Place.
The usual two hours of free parking in the heart of Bedale is unavailable while North Yorkshire County Council carries out £50,000 of repairs to the ancient cobbles.
Visitors now have to pay for parking further away if they want to do their shopping in the town and traders have noticed a drop in footfall since the work began.
However, Lucy Carr, owner of shoe boutique Shoeberry, has come up with a solution.
“I don’t want people to be put off coming into town by these repairs, so I’m offering to refund the fee for anyone who buys something from my shop.
“It’s a small gesture, but it’s my way of thanking people for continuing to support local businesses despite the inconvenience.
“Although I’ve only been here a short time, I already feel part of the community and this is my way of showing support for my customers and for the other shops and businesses.”
The work to repair and replace the cobbles began in early October and is expected to last until mid-November. A second phase of work will be carried out next year.
