Mr Johnson has scooped two regional titles awarded by the international ActionCOACH network in the past and was encouraged to attend the most recent ceremony at HeythropPark in Oxfordshire as he was in the running for another.
When Yorkshire was missed from the list of regional winners, he admitted he was a little disappointed not to have made the stage after all.
However, later in the evening, it emerged the reason for Mr Johnson’s omission was because judges wanted to present him with the overall UK award – naming him the best in terms of client results from more than 100 other ActionCOACH advisors from all over the country.
“It was a proud moment but a complete surprise.
“Of course, I’m used to giving presentations but, this time, coming up with some impromptu words of thanks was a challenge, particularly as, in my head, I’d already accepted this wasn’t my year after all!
“However – although recognition is always nice – the pleasure and rewards for me come from working with my clients, watching the light come on as they get to grips with new techniques or tricks of the trade and then grow with confidence as they find their feet in business.
“It’s a bit of a cliché, but the award is as much for them as it is for me as it’s all about the results they have all achieved through dedication and hard work.”
Mr Johnson joined the ActionCOACH network in 2007, covering the Yorkshire and Lincolnshire area. Businesses he has coached so far have varied from law firms to fabricators.
His own experience in business comes from running four firms of his own, running subsidiaries in Germany, France and Portugal and holding senior director roles with international companies.
Mr Johnson also runs rolling, fortnightly evening ActionCLUB workshops, designed to help micro-businesses and start-ups with business skills including sales, financials and marketing.
