Aberford-based John Samuel, group financial director at Renew Holdings plc has made it on to the prestigious FDs’ Excellence Awards shortlist in the small quoted FD of the year category as a result of the company’s strong financial management over the past three years.
John joined the company, which provides engineering services designed to maintain and develop UK infrastructure, in 2006 after his previous role at manufacturing firm, Filtronic plc.
John made it on to this year’s shortlist after displaying a proven track record for delivering high quality operational and financial management for the thriving company which has been supporting UK infrastructure for over 200 years.
Celebrating their tenth anniversary, the FDs’ Excellence Awards were created by Real Business in association with ICAEW and supported by the CBI.
The programme covers two overall categories: the FD Awards, designed to recognise outstanding FDs from quoted and privately owned companies in the UK; and the Excellence Awards, recognising the service providers – accounting firms, banks, software firms and consultancies – that Britain’s FDs have rated most highly in the UK’s biggest survey of FDs.
Michael Izza, chief executive, ICAEW said:
“Strong financial management is crucial to any organisation’s success and it is vital that we continue to recognise the FDs and CFOs who are truly leading from the front and enabling our country’s biggest firms to thrive.
“The UK economy is finally showing real signs of growth, and it is important that we continue to support this by championing the FDs who are working to help their organisations achieve excellence.”
Amy Carroll, group editor, Real Business and Real Deals said:
“With the tenth anniversary, 2014 is a significant year for the FDs’ Excellence Awards.
“Over its rich history, the programme has recognised a number of highly influential and forward-thinking FDs, and this year’s shortlist is no exception.
The talent and acumen that all the candidates display is outstanding and demonstrates the ever-increasing quality of financial figureheads in British business today.”
John Cridland, director-general, CBI said:
“As growth gathers momentum and demand picks up, businesses will be increasing their investment activity so sound financial management will be even more critical.
“The CBI is proud to support the FD’s Excellence Awards to recognise those who are making a major contribution to their organisations as well as the wider economy.”
The FTSE FD shortlists are produced using research from company data specialist, Jordans.
Three years’ worth of metrics such as working capital, cashflow, debtor days and return on capital are analysed to identify companies where it’s clear exemplary financial management is at work.
The winners will be chosen from the shortlists by an expert Academy of judges including company chairs, former winners and CFO-specialist head-hunters.
The FDs’ Excellence Awards ceremony takes place on 1 May 2014 at the London Marriott Hotel, Grosvenor Square.
