As part of M&S’ sustainability programme, Plan A, the 12,000sq ft store will work with local charities and form partnerships for the good of the immediate community.
The store is also being developed using sustainable practices.
No waste was sent into landfill throughout the construction phase and the main contractor, Simons Group, was audited under the Considerate Construction scheme which focuses on the appearance of the site, respect for the community, protection of the environment, securing safety and care over their workforce.
There will be 70 employees at the new store, with 50 brand new jobs and 20 colleagues joining from surrounding stores.
Store manager Andrea Watson said:
“As a local resident, I am looking forward to M&S becoming a part of my own community.
“We are committed to working with residents and customers to make a difference locally and we are keen to work in partnership with local businesses to deliver a vibrant shopping parade on Leeds Road.
“With the Tour de France and Great Yorkshire Show coming up, it’s an exciting time to be in Harrogate.
