Businesses across Yorkshire are set to be affected by new proposals which will make it cheaper for consumers to call after-sales helplines.
From tomorrow, companies providing customer helplines will have to offer an alternative, basic rate telephone number.
This may mean switching from the currently used 0845, 0844 and 0871 numbers to those starting with the prefix 01, 02, 03, 0800 or 0808.
Wakefield-based telecoms specialist NGC Networks is advising businesses which currently use these numbers to be aware of the new rules which have been introduced by the EU.
NGC Networks director Nikki Guest said:
“Many of our clients are affected by the proposals and we are advising them on what they need to do as well as ordering replacement numbers for them.
“These number types generally include many features which contact centres use for disaster recovery, call queuing and load balancing of calls.
“There will now be a cost implication for this facility which is crucial to many firms.
“Many more businesses will be in a similar position and they should seek support now to be sure they are covered.”
0845 and 0844 numbers are used by a range of businesses providing customer service functions.
They are popular with utility companies and other organisations which often operate across multiple sites and experience high volumes of customer calls.
