Age UK Sheffield welcomes new Chair

A Sheffield organisation working with and for the city’s over 50’s has appointed a new Chair.

Age UK Sheffield, which has provided a variety of services to Sheffield’s older population for over 30 years, has welcomed Professor Michael Smith to the role.

Professor Smith, 62, has been a Professor of Medial Physics and Medical Science for 25 years and a Pro Vice Chancellor for ten years, working in the NHS and Universities in Edinburgh, London, Leeds, Middleborough and Sheffield. During this time he has also set up and been involved with a number of commercial companies.

As a research medical scientist he was involved with the development of bone scanners for osteoporosis, which particularly effects older people, and MRI.

He has published extensively, held patents in these areas and been involved with the commercial development of products for patient use.

Prof Smith said:

“I am delighted to become Chair of Age UK Sheffield.

“I became a Trustee over two years ago so I know how important the work of Age UK Sheffield is.

“Every year Age UK Sheffield helps thousands of older people deal with the challenges later life sometimes presents and I wanted to devote some of my skills and expertise to this area.

“The reason I chose Age UK Sheffield at the time was that I wanted to work with an organisation which understood the needs and concerns of older people, could design the services they want and need, such as Independent Living Co-ordinators, and deliver those services in a professional manner.

“I also have experience of the different approaches to generating income which will be important for Age UK Sheffield over the next few years.

“On a personal level I was sole carer for my elderly father for a prolonged period which also gave me an insight into the needs of the elderly.”

Rosalind Eve, chief executive of Age UK Sheffield, said:

“To have someone with Mike’s expertise and knowledge as our Chair is incredibly important.

“We are looking forward to our continued relationship and building on our work to ensure that Age UK Sheffield continues to provide vital services to the people of Sheffield.”

Prof Smith also has a number of other interests including being a managing partner of Harper Keeley LLP, Chair of the Board of Medipex Ltd and Chair of the Board of the Institute of Knowledge Transfer.
