Sainsbury’s scoops baking Oscar

Sainsbury’s has been crowned In-store Bakery Retailer of the Year in the Baking Industry Awards 2014 – the industry’s equivalent of the Oscars.

The company scooped the prestigious award in the face of stiff competition based on the bakery service in its stores throughout West Yorkshire and on a detailed appraisal of bakery provision at its store in Harrogate.

The achievement was recognised last night in front of more than 800 industry guests at a gala awards ceremony at London’s Park Lane Hilton, as the company was presented with the award by the comedian and television sit. com. star, Hugh Dennis, and David Amos, managing director of award sponsor Zeelandia.

In reaching their decision, the judges considered head office submissions from each of the contestants and made an announced visit and unannounced mystery shopper visit to each of the finalists’ chosen branches. All the scores were then collated to find the best overall operator.

The award was accepted on behalf of Sainsbury’s by James Wright who is responsible for developing the company’s bakery teams in West Yorkshire and Paul Stothard who heads the team at the Harrogate store.

“At Sainsbury’s we pride ourselves on availability, consistency and quality, so I ensure our bakery managers and bakers are trained to our high standards and I help develop a constant pipeline of future talent,” said James.

“Harrogate is one of my best stores – a strong team, led by Paul, with high takings. It’s a very well managed scratch bakery, providing great quality and engagement with customers. Our bakers are multi-skilled in bread-making, confectionery and customer service.”

Liaising with the store support centre, James also reports on the reception of new initiatives, reviewing lines, monitoring quality and freshness in stores, as well as supervising production planning with managers and colleagues.

Now in its 27th year, the annual Baking Industry Awards is the premier event in the UK bakery calendar and has been recognising industry excellence since 1987.

Run by British Baker magazine, prizes are awarded across 11 categories including Speciality Bread Product, Celebration Cake Business and Baker of the Year.
