Cutting edge design gains international recognition

Barnsley based laser experts Cutting Technologies will be rubbing shoulders with globally acclaimed designers, artists and architects at a top international award ceremony later this month.

The Restaurant and Bar Design Awards, now in its sixth year, is the only awards in the world dedicated to the design of food and beverage spaces. This covers every imaginable space, from ships to airports to revered Michelin-starred establishments and pop-up restaurants.

The laser cutting and engraving experts worked with an acclaimed Hungarian designer on a prestigious London project which has now made the coveted awards shortlist.

The striking large scale laser cut Cor-Ten steel which surrounds the exterior of The Stay Club in Clapham was designed by Akos Bara and laser cut by Cutting Technologies.

The decision by Akos to use Cor-Ten steel into his award-nominated design mirrors a growing demand amongst designers and sculptors for the material.

Cor-Ten first gained prominence when Anthony Gormley chose it for the Angel of the North. It looks like raw steel but when it’s exposed to the weather it forms a natural rust-like appearance so there’s no need to paint it. The finish is variable and changing and withstands the elements without degrading.

Jane Robinson, director of Cutting Technologies said: “We were thrilled to hear about our work on The Stay Club being shortlisted in such prestigious and respected awards. Akos Bara is an amazingly talented designer and it was a privilege to work with him on The Stay Club”

“We’re fortunate to work with some of the best designers around and we’re eager to explain the opportunities lasers can offer others within the industry.

“Having our work recognised on an international platform like the Restaurant and Bar Awards will only help us to do this.”

With over 3000 entries from the UK and 70 other countries in the past five years, the Awards attract the world’s top designers, hospitality operators and judges.

The winners of the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards will be announced during a ceremony at London’s Old Truman Brewery on the 25th September 2014.
