Barnsley video production company helps youngsters into industry

A successful video production company in Barnsley is helping disaffected young people get into the competitive industry.

Visualisedit is run by former college lecturer Joada Allen-Booth and makes wedding, events and corporate videos.

The company, which is based at the Digital Media Centre, also makes music videos and has just completed a third film for Def Leppard  frontman Joe Elliott’s band Down’n’Outz.

As well as making videos, the company works with local schools to offer work experience and BTEC qualifications.

Joada said: “It is a very hard industry to get in to and if we can help at all then that’s great.

“Often the young people who come to us are school students who are disengaged and at danger of dropping out.

And we are finding that we can engage with them. They stay the whole course and they get valuable experience.”

Visualisedit is being given business support by Enterprising Barnsley, which is run by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, and clients include Sheffield Live, a local authority and the website “You are the ref”.

Joada set up Visualisedit in August 2013 after a career in sports broadcasting, video production and lecturing.

She has a degree in media production, a teaching degree and a masters degree in education.

As well as a full-time editor, the company has a regular team of eight freelancers, but this can swell to more than 20 for some projects.

“We had 22 making the most recent film for Joe Elliott and several of those were young people on work experience. Just imagine what a break that was for them,” said Joada.

Enterprising Barnsley has helped Visualisedit with tendering, branding and a new website.

“Their help has been great. It’s free and it really has helped grow the business,” said Joada. “We’ve already won a significant tender and have put in for several more.

“And being in the Digital Media Centre is a great place to be as a creative business as there are so many similar businesses you can collaborate with.”

Enterprising Barnsley offers a wide range of free business support to small and medium-sized businesses with growth potential.

The programme is supported financially by the European Union and has attracted £2,259,511 investment from the European Regional Development Fund as part of Europe’s support for the region’s economic development, through the Yorkshire and Humber ERDF Programme.

Andy Arnold, business development manager with Enterprising Barnsley, said: “We have a thriving creative and digital sector here in Barnsley, with people doing some really innovative work.

“The combination of Joada’s experience in teaching and video production is perfect. And the great thing about this business is it is a real business, but it also has a positive social effect.”
