Forecourt retailer wins hat trick of awards

When Costcutter store manager Richard Nixon travelled to London for the prestigious Forecourt Trader of the Year Awards, he was secretly hoping to pick up a trophy – but he came away with a triple triumph.

Richard won three awards for the thriving Costcutter in Askern, alongside the busy A19 near Doncaster.

They were Best Car Care & Lubricants Outlet, Best Soft Drinks Outlet and Best Tobacco Outlet.

The 3,000 sq ft shop serves around 1,500 customers a day. After becoming part of the Costcutter Supermarkets Group in May 2013, Richard has increased in-store sales by seven per cent.

The shop sells a full range of convenience products, with a Subway sandwich outlet and Jet fuels.

The site mainly caters to motorists on the busy road between Doncaster and Selby but also plays an important role as a community hub for nearby businesses and residents.

Forecourt Trader of the Year is the highest accolade for any fuel retailer.

It is recognition of entrepreneurial skill, imagination and dedication in running a successful business.

The winners are determined by a panel of experts, who pay each contender a ‘mystery shopper’ visit.

“It is fantastic and prestigious for us,” said Richard. “If I had won one I would have been more than happy but to come away with three was a dream come true.

“Awards are won on criteria like range, lighting and pricing.

“The Askern Costcutter just has a great feel about it. It is bright and fully merchandised.”

The Askern Costcutter is one of five sites in Yorkshire and the North East run by area manager David Dixon, on behalf of owner Nick Baker, managing director of NJB Services.

Costcutter Supermarkets Group operates more than 2,500 convenience stores throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland.

The Forecourt Trader of the Year Awards ceremony took place at the London Hilton Hotel, Park Lane.
