Staff retire after seven decades of combined service

Harrogate-based event services company Joe Manby Limited has recently bid a fond farewell to two long-standing members of staff who, between them, have chalked up a combined service record of more than 74 years.

Peter Hough and Peter Bull joined the company in 1976 and 1978 respectively, both rising to the role of foreman.

Peter Hough joined Joe Manby Limited as a joiner, after completing his apprenticeship with a local house building company where he first met company founder Joe Manby.

Over the years he has developed close working relationships with many of Joe Manby Limited’s organiser and exhibitor clients and has worked on conferences and exhibitions throughout the UK.

Choosing to take early retirement, Peter and his wife Jill are moving lock, stock and barrel to Perth, Australia to be closer to their son and grandchildren.

Says Peter, “There’s space and land a plenty in Australia and the plan is to build a ‘granny flat’ on land owned by my son, who’s delighted to have built-in baby sitters on hand.

“Mind you, at my age, I aim to project manage the building – rather than being too hands on!”

Peter Bull joined Joe Manby Limited from civil engineering company Dowsetts, where he was employed as a joiner. Since joining he has worked on events all over the UK from Brighton to Aberdeen, he has made many friends over his 36 years with the company.

“His attendance at his last TUC conference was marked by event organiser Stephanie Pugsley who presented him with a bottle of gin to enjoy in his retirement.

Peter says: “Retirement will be like an extended holiday – my first in 36 years. Exhibitions can be quite stressful working to ever tighter deadlines.

“My role at Joe Manby Limited was to liaise with organisers and exhibitors to ensure the smooth installation and better meet their expectations at each event.”

Peter is now planning to enjoy time together with his wife Carol, who has also just retired, and their extended family.

Peter said: “If Carol starts to suffer from ‘retired husband syndrome’ or I get bored, I’d love to offer my services for voluntary driving work for a local community charity.”

Richard Manby, company director of Joe Manby Limited, said: “Both Peters have contributed significantly to the success of the company since its infancy, and their experienced and pragmatic approach to on site challenges will be much missed.

“We wish them both long and very happy retirements.”
