Customers of Italian restaurant and cafe raise money for Alzheimers charity

The owners of an award-winning Italian restaurant in Harrogate have thanked customers for their generosity in helping a group of elderly people in the town enjoy a happy Christmas.

Sara and Stefano Lancellotti, who along with Sara’s father Brian Ferguson own Sasso restaurant and neighbouring café/pizzeria Caffe Marconi, threw open their doors on Christmas Day to serve lunch to a group of people who would otherwise have been on their own over the festive season.

Chef Stefano cooked an Italian-themed Christmas lunch for his guests – and thanks to the generosity of Sasso and Caffe Marconi customers, each diner received a gift as they left.

Now Sara and Stefano plan to hand over almost £400 to The Alzheimers’ Society after customers donated cash for gifts, crackers and table settings which wasn’t needed on the day.

Stefano, whose mother lives in Italy and has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease, wanted to help the elderly in his adopted home-town of Harrogate on Christmas Day.

“We were overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity. We had a lovely day on Christmas Day and were so pleased we could do this for a group of people who would otherwise have been on their own at Christmas,” said Sara, who teamed up with St Mark’s Church in Harrogate to organise the lunch.

“Everyone who turned up had a great time and it was a very warm and friendly atmosphere. I really want to thank all our customers who dropped in gifts to hand over to our guests – and for the monetary donations too.

“In the end we didn’t spend some of the money donated, so we aim to hand it over to The Alzheimer’s Society which will help benefit such a good cause,” she said.

Stefano thanked his team of chefs for all their hard work on Christmas Day.

“Everyone was tired after an extremely busy Christmas Eve working in Sasso, but I felt incredibly proud of my team for pulling together on Christmas morning. Everyone was full of good humour and Christmas spirit and helped prepare a delicious meal for our guests,” he said.

Sasso, which features in the 2015 Good Food Guide, has been open in Harrogate for the past 16 years. Along with sister café/pizzeria Caffe Marconi, both eateries are in Princes Square.
