Laser cutting company invests £60k in new machinery

A Barnsley company, formed in March 2014, has invested £60,000 in new machinery after moving to new premises just seven months ago.

Laser cutting and engraving specialists, Laserweb, has bought three new laser-cut machines with another, even larger, machine on order.

The company, which specialises in cutting and engraving wood, plastics, metal, leather and card, moved to Carlton Industrial Estate last year.

Such has been the demand for its specialised services, that father and son team, Earl and Daniel Holdsworth are doubling their turnover every month, and already looking at further expansion.

Laserweb’s move and expansion has been supported by Enterprising Barnsley, a European-funded programme delivered by Barnsley Council

The company has made the move from being home-based and handling small one-off orders to exporting work all over the world; as far afield as Australia, Dubai, New York, Norway, Denmark, France and Hong Kong.

Its products range from toy boxes and wooden air rifle targets, to signage and plastic cake stands.

Managing director Earl said: “I’m passionate about products that are made in Yorkshire and it’s fantastic that we now have clients from across the globe.

“We have the capacity to expand even more and are currently looking at renting another unit and taking on two apprentices.”

The company was recently commissioned to produce 6,000 laser cut serving platters for Goucho restaurants in London, Leeds, Manchester, Dubai and Hong Kong.

In addition, Laserweb has a major contract in Denmark making folding wooden tea-light holders, and has produced over 200,000 wooden postcards in the last six months.

Earl, who has worked in the laser technology sector worldwide for the past 20 years, said: “Our strength lies in our ability to develop and deliver products which meet our customers’ needs.

“I’m always happy to try and help somebody out even if it means doing a small, one-off design, and this approach has continued through to the new business.”

Earl’s son Daniel helped him set up the new company having studied graphic design at Barnsley College.

“We’re a real family concern and we cater for all industries,” said Earl. “Daniel does a lot of the design work and I handle the more technical aspects of the business.

“Even my wife helps out answering the phones when we are really busy.”

The move to larger premises prompted Earl to approach Enterprising Barnsley for support.

“They have been brilliant. They helped us get our website designed and were great for bouncing ideas off.  They also put me in touch with other businesses who could advise me, as well as helping with the move.”
