Five PR students from Leeds Beckett University have been awarded the esteemed competitive pitch prize by award-winning public relations agency, Grayling North.
Now in its 20th year, the PR pitch module is designed to put students in an authentic pitch situation and prepare them for the workplace.
All 60 final year PR students at Leeds Beckett competed for the prize, delivering a creative pitch in response to the real life brief provided by Grayling. This year, students were challenged to set up their own ‘mock’ PR agency and devise and deliver an engaging PR pitch for a regional shopping centre in the north of England.
Connect PR, comprising Amanda Champion, Tara Abbey, Sophie Sadler, Daniela Agnello and Frances Mullaney, impressed the judges with their range of ideas and were voted the winning team.
Final year PR with Marketing student, Frances Mullaney said: “Our group thoroughly enjoyed the experience of pitching to Grayling and couldn’t be happier to have won the Grayling North PR Award. This module has proved to be a favourite of all group members, as it has allowed us to gain practical skills in a competitive and enjoyable setting.”
Christine Newton, director at Grayling North, said: “Connect PR was the clear winner. The team fully understood the brief and had the right strategic approach brought to life with workable and highly creative ideas.
“We very much value our partnership with Leeds Beckett University and it’s important to us to help develop and support the PR stars of the future.”
Shirley Beresford, senior lecturer in Public Relations and Marketing, said: “The Grayling Prize for the Competitive Pitch is our most prestigious public relations in practice initiative for Leeds Beckett University PR students.
“These young professionals are at the start of their careers and the opportunity to pitch to a ‘real life’ client on a live campaign is priceless experience. So, we thank Grayling once again for their continued support of the prize and this special partnership with industry for PR students entering the world of work.”
Leeds-based PR agency, Grayling North, has worked in collaboration with Leeds Beckett University for 20 years and, in addition to providing hands-on experience, Grayling also offers a cash prize as part of the exercise.
