Barnsley engineering company sees business expand

A specialist Barnsley engineering company, which made moorings for the London Olympic sailing events and constructed roof supports for the Houses of Parliament, has seen its business expand.

Midcam Engineering is a steel engineering company with expertise in resolving design problems which has seen it working in the marine, bridge-building, rail and general building industries. 

The company, based at Redbrook Business Park, fabricates pontoons and bridges used in marine moorings. It made the moorings for the 2012 Olympic sailing event in Portland Bill and earlier this year manufactured a bridge for the Royal Southern Yacht Club in Hampshire which has just been opened by the Duke of Edinburgh.

Sales are up on the marine side of the business and the company has supplied marinas all over the world from Spain and Sydney to Goa and St Lucia. It has manufactured pontoons and bridges for the Palm Islands in Dubai, Southampton Boat Show, Chelsea Harbour in London and Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth.

In addition it was commissioned to supply roof supports for the Houses of Parliament as part of ongoing repairs to the building, and brackets for the oak beams in Norwich Cathedral.

Midcam Engineering is being given free business support by Enterprising Barnsley, a European-funded programme which is delivered by Barnsley Council.

Director Nick Midgley said: “The niche we have in the marine sector has opened up a global market, which is really boosting our business.

“All our work is bespoke and we build to order. We can manufacture bridges up to 60 metres long and get a lot of work supplying bridges for bridleways, footpaths and over rivers.”

In 2005 the company was commissioned to construct the hand rails and protective fencing on a viaduct over the A1, which is part of the Transpennine Trail. 

Midcam is also constructing parts for a new steam locomotive for the Groudle Glen railway on the Isle of Man; has made containers for the building industry, which are used to transport materials to site; and produced agricultural silos used for animal feed and storing biomass pellets.

The company has recently taken on two new apprentices and a welder to meet demand, taking its total number of staff to 12. It has also invested £50,000 in a new computer controlled plate profiling machine, which was installed in January.

Midcam Engineering, has been helped by Enterprising Barnsley to gain vital European accreditation.

Since 2014 the EN1090 standard has become a legal requirement in the UK for companies constructing steel work used in buildings and accreditation at level 3 allows Midcam to manufacture bridges and large structures across the European Union.

“We couldn’t have done this without the help of Enterprising Barnsley,” said Nick. 

“They brokered in and fully funded expert advice and support which was invaluable, and having the higher level of accreditation keeps us one step ahead of the competition.”

Enterprising Barnsley offers a wide range of free business support to small and medium-sized businesses with growth potential.

The programme is supported financially by the European Union and has attracted £3,015,276 investment from the European Regional Development Fund as part of Europe’s support for the region’s economic development, through the Yorkshire and Humber ERDF Programme.
