Community to help open Bradford shopping centre

With three weeks to go until opening, The Broadway has revealed plans for its launch event that will bring the Bradford community together to help open the centre.

Singer and X Factor star Alexandra Burke will officially open the centre with a ribbon cutting at the Petergate Mall entrance at 10am on Thursday November 5. She will be joined by local community heroes who will cut ribbons at the additional entrances, and other members of the community including the Lord Mayor, Leader of the Council, Cllr David Green and Westfield and Meyer Bergman.

More than 300 people will be given exclusive access to the centre two hours before opening for a VIP viewing and performance by Alexandra Burke and Bradford locals could be in with a chance of winning tickets over the next few weeks.

The launch will kick off a weekend of activities at The Broadway, with plenty of treats and giveaways for Bradford shoppers.

Alexandra Burke said: “It’s an honour to be invited up to Bradford to open The Broadway shopping centre. I look forward to meeting the people of Bradford and cutting the ribbon on opening day and also maybe doing a little shopping.”

Myf Ryan, Westfield director of marketing said: “The opening of The Broadway will mark a fantastic day for the people Bradford. We’ve enjoyed getting to know the Bradford community over the last few months and working with them to showcase the soul that already exists in Bradford through our #NewCitySoul campaign.

“We wanted to extend this into our opening event, with opportunities for the community to get involved over the launch weekend.”

Bradford Council Leader David Green said: “We’re really looking forward to the grand opening of the Broadway shopping centre. The launch looks amazing and is bound to bring in the crowds.

“It will lead on to the Christmas lights spectacular and our very popular reindeer parade the following weekend which gives shoppers lots of reasons to come to our city and enjoy the run-up to the festive season.”

The £260 million development will create 2,500 new retail jobs and is the largest retail centre in the country to open in 2015. The Broadway features leading department and fashion stores, including anchors Marks & Spencer and  Debenhams,  and high street fashion favourites H&M, Next, Topshop, Topman, New Look, schuh and River Island.

Together with the retail boost, The Broadway includes a seven-unit food court and a range of nationally recognised restaurants – including Patisserie Valerie, Taco Bell and Wrap Chic.
