A young property developer and investor from Yorkshire has triumphed at the national Director of the Year Awards, held by the Institute of Directors (IoD).
University of York graduate Alex Szepietowski was presented with the Student of the Year award at the prestigious event, held at the Lancaster London Hotel.
Alex, 26, has a property development business which provides high quality, affordable housing for tenants in Yorkshire. He also works with investors to develop safe and substantial returns on property.
“I am absolutely delighted to win this award, which gives further credibility to my business. Now I want to share my passion and inspire young people to have the self-belief and courage to set up their own business. A young age and lack of experience should not be limiting factors,” he said.
“I have been fortunate enough to meet some amazing people through the IoD, who have given me support and mentoring.”
IoD student membership provides a range of benefits designed to give young people a competitive advantage when applying for jobs and setting up a business. This includes high-level networking, business events and mentoring.
Two company directors from the North East also won at the Director of the Year awards. Daniel Robinson of Hartlepool-based Gus Robinson Developments was named SME Company Director of the Year, while Stewart McNicholl of ASKAMS Compliance Services, based in Cramlington, Northumberland, was named as the best Young Director.
The awards were judged by 33 governance, business and marketing experts from the IoD network across the country.
Simon Walker, director general at the Institute of Directors, congratulated this year’s winners.
“Great businesses are made by great leaders, and it is fantastic to be able to reward some of the country’s finest companies and most inspiring directors at the Director of The Year Awards,” he said.
“As an organisation for business leaders, we know that good governance and ethical and innovative leadership are the foundations of a successful company.
“Today’s winners embody these principles, and display the hard-nosed business acumen and commercial drive needed to produce great products and world-leading services.”
