Success on the cards for creative young carer

Young carer Poppy Neely has scooped a top prize in a national Christmas card competition.

The ten-year-old, of Sutton-in-Craven, near Skipton, impressed judges with her festive design for the annual Carers Trust challenge.

Poppy and her family are supported by Carers’ Resource, a Skipton-based charity which provides help to unpaid carers who look after a loved one who is frail, has a disability or serious illness.

She looks after brother Jack, seven, who has behavioural problems and learning difficulties, and heard about the competition at one of the Carers’ Resource Craven young carers groups.

The Sutton C of E Primary School pupil was invited, with mum Janine, to the Trust’s conference gala dinner in Birmingham to be presented with a special framed copy of her card and Argos vouchers.

Mum Janine Norton said: “It was amazing. Poppy was so excited and it was lovely to see her being a ‘normal’ ten-year-old again.

“We had such a great time together, just the two of us, travelling down on the train and staying in the hotel. It was a very special experience for both of us, and one we’ll always remember.

“We are really proud of her and it’s a great achievement.”

Chris Whiley, director of Carers’ Resource, who also attended the ceremony as part of the Trust annual conference, said: “It was fabulous to see Poppy collect her prize at the dinner and to be there to congratulate her.

“The support we give to young carers in Craven is funded entirely through donations so anything that helps to raise awareness about their role is always great.

“We give them support they need to enable them to offload about their caring responsibilities; to share their experiences with other young carers; and to give them the opportunity to take part in social and leisure activities and to enjoy being a child or a young adult.”

Poppy’s colourful design, which includes a decorated Christmas tree with presents underneath, is one of the Carers Trust cards this festive season and can be bought on their website at

This is the second year running a young carer supported by Carers’ Resource has won a prize in this competition. Last year Emily Wood, also of Craven, was a winner.
