Barnsley’s Better Barnsley town centre regeneration project has won IBI Group joint first place in the prestigious Urban Design Group, Practice Award; a top national accolade for architecture, landscape and planning practices involved in urban design.
IBI Group’s Marcus Wilshere and Seamus Lennon submitted the Barnsley scheme as a good example of urban design based on a clear delivery process and sound recommendations for future projects.
Their submission described the IBI Group’s approach to creating a highly successful town centre prospectus that clearly demonstrated to Barnsley Council and local stakeholders how real improvements could be achieved without losing potential investors.
A short film was also produced to showcase how the project is developing and featured members of the project team explaining how the Better Barnsley project is progressing and what Barnsley Council’s aspirations are for the future.
Marcus Wilshere said: “By taking the lead in regenerating their town centre, Barnsley is pioneering solutions that are applicable to many other town centres up and down the country and especially places that need to regain the ability to adapt incrementally to changing demands. Unlocking this potential required an integrated approach that is a core strength of IBI’s interdisciplinary team.”
Barnsley Council Leader, Coun Sir Stephen Houghton CBE, said: “This is a significant award which Barnsley Council is very proud to win at this early stage in the Better Barnsley project; hopefully it is the first of many.
“These ambitious plans will boost regeneration and act as a catalyst for further investment in the town.
“Our new town centre will be vibrant, walkable and family friendly; full of opportunity and potential. It will be compact enough to be welcoming and accessible, but large enough to have a high quality market, shops, leisure and cultural facilities.”
The UDG’s Urban Design Awards are now in their eighth year. Since its launch in 2007, the shortlisting panel has considered over 300 submissions across a range of categories, highlighting some of the outstanding and innovative urban design work being undertaken throughout the UK and beyond.
This great news follows the recent announcement of the appointment of Henry Boot Construction Limited as the main contractor and Turner & Townsend along with its partner Queensberry Real Estate as the Development Management Organisation (DMO) for the Better Barnsley scheme.
