Alumni from Leeds Trinity University have joined a business mentoring scheme to support current students in finding a job after graduation.
20 professionals currently working in business, psychology or sport and health sectors have offered their support to the University by mentoring final year students.
Mentors will provide encouragement, offer professional development and identify goals for students over the six-month scheme which runs until September 2016.
Mark Dolby graduated from Leeds Trinity in 2004 with a 2:1 BA Hons in Media with Management, and spent a decade working in Marketing and Communications for various agencies and organisations before starting his own photography business. He’s currently mentoring Gareth Craven, a third year Business student and founding director of Hire an Artist.
Mark said: “I’ve personally felt the benefit of having various mentors throughout out my life – from my father, through to teachers and lecturers, and more recently colleagues in my industry. Understanding the potential impact a good mentor can have, I jumped at the opportunity to get involved with the alumni scheme, and it provides a great way to stay connected with Leeds Trinity.
“Although we’ve only just started the process I’m enjoying working with Gareth immensely. He’s clearly very driven and eager to learn. I really hope I’m helping him to find his own answers and path, and I’m enjoying the opportunity to reflect on my own career and lessons I’ve learnt.”
Joann Carter is a final year BSc Nutrition, Food and Health student at Leeds Trinity. She is working with Dale Crookes, a 2012 Nutrition and Food graduate with specific expertise in nutrition and dietetics.
Joann said: “I wanted to be involved with the scheme to gain knowledge of the industry and to help with my job search after graduation. Dale has been really helpful in providing support, identifying relevant contacts within the industry and suggestions of where to look for work. She even sent me a link to a job this morning! I’ve really enjoyed it so far and I’m looking forward to working with her more over the summer.”
The mentor programme will run as a pilot scheme for the first year, and was officially launched at a mentoring advice session with David Shindler – a speaker on employability, young employment and coaching issues. The scheme is a joint initiative between the Alumni office and Careers office at Leeds Trinity.
Brett Arnall, Alumni Officer at Leeds Trinity University, said: “As one of the first universities to include compulsory professional work placements with every degree, we want to give as much support as possible to support the employability of our graduates.
“The mentoring scheme will harness the goodwill and experience of our alumni community to provide students with the knowledge, experience and skills of someone already working in their industry.
“I would like to thank everyone involved in making this scheme a possibility – particularly alumni who are giving up their time to support our students, but also my colleagues, especially our intern Kelly Woodward who has been instrumental in pulling this programme together.”
