FSB seeks compensation for Hull traders

The FSB East Yorkshire branch has set up a petition calling upon Hull City Council to compensate traders in Hull city centre who have endured a year-long massive loss of trade as a result of the disruption caused by extensive street works.

Branch chairman John Olivant said: “Jobs and livelihoods have been placed in jeopardy for over a year as footfall in many town centre shops has fallen to unsustainable levels.

“We appreciate the need for redevelopment in readiness for the 2017 City of Culture, but the burden of lost trade should be borne by the city as a whole rather than on individual traders.

“For this reason we hope that Hull City Council will support the repayment of business rates for the duration of the disruption to secure the survival of many town centre traders and the staff they employ.”
