Northern teamed up with popular TV series, Walks Around Britain, to host a special walking event to celebrate yesterday’s Yorkshire Day.
Anyone who boarded the 10.49am with a ticket from Leeds Railway Station to Ribblehead had the opportunity to join Walks Around Britain, writer and presenter, Andrew White on a guided Yorkshire Day walk. The easy circular walk formed part of the Yorkshire day pilgrimage on foot and rail that took in some of the most iconic scenery and sights along the famous Settle & Carlisle Railway in North Yorkshire.
Starting at Leeds train station, travellers were serenaded by brass band, Winston’s Pennine Jazz, as they travelled and special announcements were made on the train to point out landmarks and historical points along the route. After disembarking at Ribblehead the Yorkshire Day walkers set off from the station on foot, accompanied by Andrew, on a specially-created walk that took in the majestic Ribblehead viaduct.
Northern’s regional director for the East, Paul Barnfield, said: “We’re proud to be Northern and that means we get to run our trains to all four corners of Yorkshire.
“Whether you’re a city-dweller or you’ve escaped to the country, one thing is for sure – you’re never far from some inspiring places to walk in Yorkshire. We’re thrilled to join the thousands of people celebrating what Yorkshire has to offer with this special event on Yorkshire Day.”
Thanks to a competition on Northern’s website, 20 lucky outdoor enthusiasts were also treated to white roses and a premium picnic filled with some of Yorkshire’s best known culinary delights, including treats from Betty’s & Taylors of Harrogate, Toppings Pies and Hoots and Nothing But Snacks.
The Ribblehead, Yorkshire Day walk was part of Northern’s We Are Northern campaign which celebrates everything the north of England has to offer.
Playing a vital role by connecting hundreds of thousands of people to work, leisure, education and more every week, Northern’s footprint covers some of the most celebrated walking country in the UK.
