East Yorkshire accountancy firm Sowerby FRS has changed its name to Sowerby and announced a merger with A MacDonald and Co, a Hull-based accountants.

The move has been designed to facilitate further growth at Sowerby, which has more than doubled in size in the past 11 years and now has five partners and employs 42 staff.

Sowerby can trace its practice back to 1922 and last year opened a new office in Goole.

A MacDonald and Co was founded in 1933 and based on Parliament Street, Hull.

The merger will see the firm operate out of offices in Beverley, Hornsea and Goole.

The merger was unveiled at an event at Ferens Art Gallery. Guests included associates and the region’s business community.

Richard Skewis, partner at Sowerby, said: “It’s an exciting time to be at Sowerby, with the constant expansion of our client-base and workforce. This merger with A MacDonald and Co has also given us a good opportunity to evaluate our branding – we now have a newly designed brand and website which has created a whole new look.”

Patrick Scargill, partner at A MacDonald and Co, said: “Joining forces with Sowerby makes us one of the leading practices in East Yorkshire in terms of size and geography. The specialities of the firm compliment each other very well and we are looking forward to further growth.”

The firm is particularly strong in the medical, healthcare, agriculture, construction, charity and family wealth management sectors.
