AN award-winning Huddersfield games company picked up yet another prize when it was chosen as the University of Huddersfield’s start-up company of the year earning a prestigious Duke of York Young Entrepreneurs Award.
The Huddersfield games design company Ocean Spark Studios was launched by Zachray Cundall, Ellie Brown and Helen Andrzejowska who have just completed the final year of their games design course at the University.
The group set up the business two years ago during their Enterprise Placement Year, an alternative placement year run by the University’s Enterprise Team in The Duke of York Young Entrepreneur Centre.
With the help of the University’s Enterprise Team, the studio has secured additional investment of £1,500 from Santander Universities and £300 from the Kirklees Alternative Market.
Earlier this year, Ocean Spark scooped the Student Hero prize at the Grads in Games Awards, which had entrants from 81 universities across Europe. Judges said that the Huddersfield trio had been an “inspiration to many and a real beacon for the games industry”.
The Duke of York Young Entrepreneurs Awards are presented annually by the Duke himself at the University of Huddersfield.
The awards are open to universities throughout the North of England and in 2019 – the seventh year of the scheme – there were businesses from 18 institutions in Yorkshire, Lancashire, Durham and Northumbria chosen to receive the prize.
The University of Huddersfield is one of the leading centres in the UK for games courses and recently dominated the two major games industry awards, Grads in Games Awards and Game Republic Student Showcase Competition.
