The online educational publisher Twinkl has been awarded a Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Innovation.
The awards are recognised as the most prestigious awards for UK businesses and Twinkl is one of only 66 companies across the UK to receive an award in the innovation category.
Twinkl produces high-quality teaching and learning materials, including resources that can be used online or downloaded and printed.
The company received the award for its collection of resources called Twinkl PlanIt, which was first created and curated in response to significant changes to the National Curriculum for England in 2014.
Twinkl PlanIt covers core and foundation subjects for primary schools and provides resources ranging from lesson plans and differentiated class activities to home learning tasks and challenge cards. These are available for classes from Year one to Year six. First created in 2014, the range is still an essential resource collection for educators today.
The Twinkl PlanIt units of work were also uniquely designed to allow for maximum flexibility and inclusion, so teachers can easily deliver lessons to the whole class while giving students activities that best suit their learning needs. This saves significant time and energy for teachers, which can then be spent on other areas of preparation, or with their pupils in the classroom.
Twinkl was recognised for its unique approach to creating Twinkl PlanIt, including how the company created the materials by engaging with teachers directly and hiring current and former teachers to make them, as is still the case at Twinkl today.
Twinkl is one of only 220 UK businesses to receive a Queen’s Award for Enterprise for 2020. This is also the second time that Twinkl has received the award, having won a Queen’s Award for International Trade in 2018.
Jonathan Seaton, CEO and Co-founder of Twinkl, said: “We have always tried to bring something different and exciting to everyone who uses Twinkl and we’re completely over the moon that our innovative approach has been recognised in this way.
“Being honoured with this award is an absolute testament to the incredible team we have at Twinkl, in the UK and across the world. We are so proud to have been founded in Sheffield and to now be taking our mission to help those who teach globally.
“But, none of this would have been possible without the incredible educators that use Twinkl and help us keep making resources and services that are innovative and really matter. I would like to thank them for their amazing ongoing support.”
The company has also recently been praised by educators across the world for its response during COVID-19. Twinkl has made all of its resources free in countries and regions globally to support school closures and has created a free Home Learning Hub full of daily activities and materials.
