Arco’s blue light tribute to NHS workers

Hull safety company Arco, is lighting up its National Distribution Centre (NDC) blue, in tribute to NHS staff on the frontline.

Arco’s NDC staff, who are part of the supply chain effort that is delivering urgently needed products to hospitals and carers, joined in the Clap for the NHS to show their solidarity and support.

The arrival of the coronavirus led to an international surge in demand for all types of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including respiratory protective equipment (RPE), coveralls and sanitisers. As experts in safety, Arco has been able to respond quickly to ensure that critical items get to those at the frontline of the response to Covid-19.

The £30m investment in the 220,000 sq. ft. expansion of its national distribution centre almost trebled its storage capacity and enabled the company to cope with the exceptional demand by more than doubling its dispatch capabilities.

Traditionally operating a 24/5 working week, the warehouse has transitioned into a 24/7 operation for the past six-weeks to service the increased level of orders and enabled Arco to prioritise  large critical orders for the NHS and food industry, in order to keep the country running.

The human effort has been incredibly important in ensuring that Arco can meet the demand for products. In the last three weeks, Arco has doubled the size of its nightshift team to ensure seamless support at all hours; this has included experienced day staff moving to night shifts and support from external resources as well.

Continuing to operate while protecting staff members has been an important challenge, but social distancing measures are in place. Arco was also quick to take action and relocate its core functions including relocating 200 people in its Customer Engagement team to home working.

David Evison, managing director at Arco, said: “I would like to personally thank all of our staff who have worked so hard in recent weeks to ensure that we as a responsible business are able to support the government in providing critical products to those who need it most. This is a very human effort and the real character of our family business is showing.

“We will continue to do everything we can to support the government and companies on the frontline through this pandemic while keeping our workers safe and we are showing our appreciation every Thursday by joining the nation in the Clap for the NHS.”
