Women in Property Yorkshire & North East Student Awards celebrated virtually

Women in Property were not about to let social distancing get in the way of holding their Yorkshire & North East Student Awards 2020. On June 9, the families, friends and professionals from the built environment industry all celebrated the achievements of 15 talented regional student finalists…on Zoom.

“The National Student Awards programme was established to seek out our top built environment students each year and raise awareness of the many amazing and diverse career opportunities offered across this industry.

“Two Yorkshire & North East judging panels took place back in mid-February before lockdown and, after all their hard work, we didn’t want to let our 15 regional finalists down by not holding an awards event,” said Sarah Wills, Women in Property branch chairman.

The Women in Property team asked each of the 15 finalists to submit a one-minute video showcasing themselves and their work, which they loaded onto YouTube.

The videos were then shown on Zoom, together with a presentation from keynote speaker David Timbs, Partner with long-time regional sponsor, chartered quantity surveyors Christopher Smith Associates and Monica Green, national chairman of Women in Property and director of York-based PR and digital agency The Partners Group.

David Timbs, announced the Yorkshire & North East 2020 winners, who are:

Fidelia Florentia, studying Architecture at Huddersfield University

The judges said of Fidelia, “she has instant impact and a great personality, an excellent candidate, great confidence.”

Katie Howarth, studying Quantity Surveying at Sheffield Hallam University

The judges said of Katie: “She is smart and friendly, genuine, honest and humble, with clear ambition – she knows what she wants.”

David Timbs said: “Due to current circumstances, this was a somewhat different type of regional awards event to previous years but full credit and appreciation to all at the Women in Property Yorkshire and North East Branch for organising the virtual event and ensuring that it happened.

“Once again, the calibre of all candidates was outstanding, and all deserve congratulations for being nominated for the regional judging. I praise their dedication, commitment, and passion in their respective fields, in particular, Fidelia and Katie. The future of our Industry is certainly in good hands.  I wish both Fidelia and Katie every success in the National Final.”

Fidelia and Katie each win a cheque for £500, a trophy and access to Women in Property’s acclaimed mentoring programme.

They will represent the Yorkshire & North East region at the national final which, subject to Government advice, will be held on September 16 at Claridge’s in London.
