Leeds Building Society is celebrating the first six months of its national charity partnership with Dementia UK, with the announcement it has raised more than £100,000.
Many families living with dementia have felt even more isolated during the pandemic and the money raised is helping the charity’s Admiral Nurse Dementia Helpline, which is open to anybody with questions or concerns about this life-limiting condition.
Coronavirus meant traditional fundraising plans had to be put on hold and colleagues and members came up with innovative ways to raise money while following social distancing guidelines, often from home. This included online quizzes and a daily sponsored challenge throughout July; with colleagues doing everything from running to hula hooping.
In April, the Society kick started its four-year partnership with Dementia UK – which aims to raise £500,000 to bring emotional and practical support closer to the homes of families – with a £25,000 donation.
When things get challenging or difficult for people with dementia and their families, Admiral Nurses work alongside them, giving the compassionate one-to-one support, expert guidance and practical solutions that can be difficult to find elsewhere. They work in the community, care homes, hospitals, hospices and for the charity’s Helpline. Over the course of the partnership, the number of people affected by dementia in the UK will increase to one million.
“Coronavirus has highlighted just how important it is to support charities in these unprecedented times, and this is a really fantastic effort from our members and colleagues to reach this total in just six months,” says Richard Fearon, Chief Executive Officer of Leeds Building Society.
“Our colleagues have really gone the extra mile to raise funds while working from home and following social distancing guidelines to ensure Dementia UK’s team of dedicated Admiral Nurses are able to reach those who need help the most. The events of recent months have reminded us all how mutual support for each other makes a real difference.”

“These have not been easy times, particularly for families with dementia who have had to isolate because of the pandemic, and who have in some instances found it difficult to visit loved ones in care. As a result of this, we are hearing continuously about more pronounced symptoms in those diagnosed and of increased emotional distress from the carers themselves.
“What families with dementia need right now is the expertise, compassion and advocacy of dementia specialist Admiral Nurses. This fundraising from Leeds Building Society will allow us to provide just this to more families at this challenging and uncertain time.”
