Cooper King Distillery, based near York in Sutton-on-the-Forest, have been presented with a Community Spirit Award for their work within the community throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.
local MP Kevin Hollinrake visited the distillery to present the award.
Set up by the UK Spirits Alliance (UKSA), a coalition of spirits producers from across the UK, the Awards recognise distilleries like Cooper King who have gone above and beyond to help their communities during the COVID crisis.
Cooper King Distillery, run by Chris Jaume and Dr Abbie Neilson, began manufacturing hand sanitiser from their 100 per cent green energy powered distillery, answering the call to support their communities in the fight against Covid-19. They produced 80 per cent alcohol hand sanitiser to support local care homes, schools, charities and front-line services including police teams throughout the pandemic, which was crucial in protecting and supporting the community. Cooper King now supply hand sanitiser to local businesses to protect them from the virus.
Co-founders Chris and Abbie said: “It was an obvious choice for us to step in and help out during the pandemic, as we’re not just focussed on our environmental responsibilities but our social responsibilities too. We are honoured to receive this award, and were delighted to have our local MP Kevin Hollinrake present us with it. We’re humbled that the industry has recognised our work supporting key workers and organisations during the pandemic.”
Speaking at the award presentation, Kevin Hollinrake MP said: “It’s fantastic to see Chris, Abbie and team being recognised for their work during the pandemic. Their provision of hand sanitiser has helped keep the local community safe, for which I am grateful. They are a brilliant couple with an excellent product and a very exciting business.”
A spokesperson for the UK Spirits Alliance said: “Distilleries across the UK like Cooper King have been supporting their local communities throughout the pandemic, and the Community Spirit Awards is a great way to recognise that. We are delighted that Kevin Hollinrake MP presented this award, and we hope that he will continue his long-standing support for the distillery and the wider industry as we approach a potential Budget.”
