National retailer ‘The Works’ has made a surprise donation to Leeds Children’s Hospital this week, donating an amazing 2,000 gifts to their charity Christmas appeal.
A dedicated lorry was required to drop off the delivery on Monday, which was accepted by the hospital’s play team and charity volunteers. The company, who have over 500 stores in the UK, gave hundreds of books to the hospital, along with more than 1,500 toys and craft sets.
The donation was made as part of the Leeds Cares Charity Christmas Appeal, which aims to raise funds and secure gifts to support patients who need to spend Christmas in hospital.
The charity usually runs a series of gift drop off days in December but these have been interrupted due to the coronavirus pandemic. This year, like every year, nearly 300 children will be spending Christmas Day at Leeds Children’s Hospital, with hundreds more needing to visit for appointments in the weeks beforehand.
CEO of The Works, Gavin Peck, said: “The Works are delighted to be in a position to help make a small difference to the many unfortunate children and their families who will be spending Christmas away from home this year by donating books, toys and gifts to Leeds Children’s Hospital. I really hope this goes some way in helping spread a little cheer and joy to those who deserve it most at this extra special time.
“This is the start of a much longer journey as ‘giving something back’ is very much at the heart of our business and our wider strategy and we are currently exploring ways to further extend our support to help more local charities and communities in the future.”
General manager of Leeds Children’s Hospital Suzanne Abrahams said: “We’re just amazed by the generosity of this gift. Our staff work so hard to make the Christmas period feel as normal as possible, through distraction and play, even though it’s often a time filled with uncertainty for our patients and their families.
“This donation will support our play team to continue their important work, not just over Christmas but in the weeks before and after too. We cannot thank ‘The Works’ enough for their kindness, it really is incredible.”
