Engineering, environment and design consultancy Sweco UK has created two new divisions and made several key appointments to its leadership team as the business combines its capabilities with MLM Group.
Sweco acquired MLM Group – one of the largest, privately-owned engineering, environmental and building control consultancies – in 2019 to create a combined business with an annual turnover of £108m.
The firm, which employs 204 people at its headquarters in Leeds, has launched an Advisory and Planning division to help clients tackle the challenges of sustainability, climate change, urbanisation and digitalisation, by providing specialist advisory services and scheme planning support early in the project lifecycle.
A new Buildings Standards division will offer technical services in the areas of regulations, compliance and quality, complementing Sweco’s expertise in building engineering with MLM Group’s experience as one of the largest approved inspectors in the UK.
Former MLM Group chairman Steve Oliver, who will lead on business development, will join a new ten-strong Sweco UK leadership team alongside former MLM Group directors Ben Freedman and Paul Eggleton, who will head-up the Buildings and Building Standards divisions, respectively.
Andy King, who currently leads the business’s energy and environment teams, will head-up Advisory and Planning, while Andy Sang, formerly Sweco’s Water and Asset Management Director, will lead Infrastructure, which will encompass the business’s work in rail, water and highways, as well as civil structures, energy and development infrastructure.
The leadership team will continue to be led by president, Max Joy.
Max Joy said: “The integration of MLM Group will transform our business, bringing us closer to our clients in helping them navigate the core challenges of climate change and urbanisation to improving sustainability, and marking a major step on our journey to becoming the consultancy of choice in the UK and Ireland.
“Our leadership team has been strengthened with the appointments of Ben, Paul and Steve, who bring a combination of entrepreneurial drive, expertise and experience in building design, specialist structural engineering capabilities, building standards and business development that creates a compelling proposition for the markets in which we work.
“The new leadership structure harnesses the ability and the potential of our combined businesses and we look forward to working together as we focus on delivering growth and inspiring collaboration across the business in the years ahead.”
Sweco UK has consulted on a wide range of landmark projects since entering the UK market in 2015, which include the modernisation of research sites for the British Antarctic Survey, our work on the N/M20 Cork to Limerick Road Improvement Scheme and our involvement in the 103-turbine, Viking wind farm in Shetland, which when complete, will be the UK’s largest onshore wind farm in terms of annual electricity output, playing a crucial role in contributing towards the UK and Scotland’s net zero targets.
