A team from the Yorkshire-based industrial lubricant manufacturer, ROCOL, will don lycra and take to two wheels as they tackle the Coast 2 Coast cycling challenge on the June 26.
The group of six will take on the gruelling 150-mile route, which runs from Seascale to Whitby to raise money for Bowel Cancer UK. The charity is particularly close to the heart of one team member – Marketing Communications Manager Shaun Heys – after losing a close family member to the disease.
Shaun Heys, Marketing Communications Manager at ROCOL and a keen cyclist said, “I wanted a way to raise money in remembrance of my sister-in-law who bravely battled this terrible disease. She was a warrior and battled every step of the way with so much positivity. Laura was a true inspiration to everyone around her.
“As a team we have set ourselves a goal of raising £5,000 by taking part in the challenge. I’d love to smash through that target and raise as much as we possibly can.”
As well as the daunting distance, there is the small matter of 4,500m of elevation, roughly the same height as climbing the Matterhorn. The route takes the team through the Lake District National Park, The Yorkshire Dales and The North Yorkshire Moors and includes climbs up both Hardknott Pass and Wrynose Pass.
Shaun said: “Everyone has really embraced the enormity of this challenge and is training extremely hard for it. The parcours takes in some stunningly beautiful parts of the country, which I hope will be a good distraction from the tired legs!
“It’s been great having so many friends and colleagues jump at the chance of joining the challenge and helping to raise money for Bowel Cancer UK.”
Filippo Pasquini, vice president & general manager of Fluids Europe, division within which ROCOL operates, is returning to the saddle in support of the challenge.
He said “I had known of this challenging ride and wanted to put it to my colleagues as an initiative to promote healthy living within the company. As soon as Shaun told me his reasons for talking part, everything came together. It promises to be a tough, but enjoyable day in the saddle!”
The team have set up a Just Giving page for donations, which is found here: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/rocolc2cchallenge2020
