Sheffield’s Wake Smith Solicitors has achieved recommended rankings in nine practice areas according to one of the UK’s leading legal directories, The Legal 500.

The firm remains one of Yorkshire and The Humber’s top firms of solicitors in the 2022 edition of the industry guide with high praise for individuals across the firm in litigation, company commercial, family, clinical negligence and employment.

Director Michael Doherty is highlighted as a “standout star” with colleague Liz Shaw in the firm’s versatile commercial litigation team noted as being a ‘strong commercial outfit with national reach’.

Wake Smith’s company commercial team keeps its tier two placing in The Legal 500 for its strong advice on corporate transactions to SME’s and manufacturing sector clients in South Yorkshire with head Duncan Shepherd speaking “common sense” offering “honest and practical advice.”

Four teams are ranked in tier three, including commercial property “providing the quality of service and professionalism expected from a larger firm of solicitors whilst keeping the accessibility of a local business”; clinical negligence featuring “experienced and effective solicitor” Scott Haslam; private client with head Suzanne Porter demonstrating ‘a unique blend of professionalism and efficiency’ and family where director Lindsey Canning is noted as one of best “financial remedy solicitors”.

Also in tier three is Wake Smith’s employment team which was bolstered by the arrival of well-regarded practice head Joan Pettingill.

In a competitive property litigation area, Wake Smith’s team is noted as ‘one of the few in South Yorkshire with the experience and skill to deal with complex commercial property cases’, while in banking and finance, Duncan Shepherd’s 20 year’s experience is praised as is Neil Salter for his commercial property and secured lending advice.

John Baddeley, Wake Smith’s chairman, said: “Wake Smith has another strong show in this year’s The Legal 500 after an exceptional 18 months for all businesses. Our many talented individuals have demonstrated dedication to their clients and profession, and gone that extra mile to make sure our high levels of advice and customer service have continued.”

Law firms only appear in The Legal 500 ranking tables and commentary on merit, through independent research and feedback from 250,000 in-house peers and access to law firms’ deals and confidential matters.
